Once the energy of the train exceeds the inertia and tyre drag of the car, any increase in train mass makes little difference.
The car absorbs just enough of the available energy to get it moving with the locomotive, and the speed at impact determines the amount of damage. The car is crushed because it can't get out of the way quickly enough.
That car ended up with both sides touching. Can't get any flatter than that! Does a bullet harm you because it's heavy or because it's moving fast?
