exodus21v20 (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
If a man strikes his male or female slave with a rod and he dies at his hand, he shall be punished. If, however, he survives a day or two, no vengeance shall be taken; for he is his property. Ex 21:20-21
You may also buy them from among the children of aliens among you, or from their families, whom they begot in your land. These shall become your property: you may keep them as a possession for your children, for them to inherit as property forever. Such you may treat as slaves. Lev 25:44

Cant help smiling.funny how we tend to interprete things using our ideas and present views of life.
biblical slavery wasnt like negroes who were maltreated(lm black)it was a way for people to work for others to pay of debts.
Then there were the years of jubilee where debts were written off and slaves were allowed to go EXCEPT when they decided to stay,in which case they became slaves forever.
If laws at a time do not fit with laws your nation, it doesnt make them wrong - just different

Further, not to spam, a man only came into slavery because of his OWN choice as an alternative to paying off a LOAN. After his service repayed the loan, or SEVEN years past - which ever came first - the man was RELEASED from both his DEBT and SERVITUDE. He was, FREED without further obligation; EVEN if he still owed money. What WE call "slavery", is nothing more than INDENTURED or INDEBTED SERVITUDE, according to THE Word of God.

Slavery was, and is, indeed allowed by our God. It is for the misinterpretations of man, that slavery became an abominable thing; for a man was to treat his slaves with a fair, and respectable hand. He was to recognize, the depth of his slaves commitment unto him, the Master, and respect for the VALUE of that life given in service to him. Further, a slave was AUTOMATICALLY offered his release from slavery, after SEVEN diligent years; but many, preferring the good life they had, stayed.

This is really an issue whether we recognize God as God or are we acting as if we are better than God. The Torah and later the Bible is God's word. You may misinterpret God and His word but you don't go around saying God should not be believed because you read something that is unpalatable which I suspect you came to the conclusion because you didn't read the entire salvation story in the Bible from OT until it builds up in the New Testament and fulfilled in Christ's work on the cross.

I would suggest you highly refrain from making such conclusive comments like "Bible got it wrong." based on your own opinion and limited knowledge of the times the Israelites were living in. That's why I suggested you do research before saying anything. Few points. God obviously did not condone slavery because he delivered Israel out of slavery from egypt. The slavery among the Israelites were VASTLY different from tyrannical forms of slavery. There is more to it, but I have no more slpace left. |
