They're just very superstitious, hence there are many legends/myths that come from Mexico about "real" events and happenings that scare the crap out of you when you're a kid. I used to believe all the stories I heard, especially the "Llorona" [Crying Woman] one. My family sounds so convincing... I'm 21, and even to this day they swear it's true.
I'm skeptical about most of these stories, but I don't believe what I can't see.
