being Australian i feel i can say that while America has been more creative or influential in their music, there does seem to be a pattern of English bands perfecting what the Americans start and maybe taking it a step further

I thought drugs were around for along time. I think the more people jam together the more they pick up on feeling the music in their heart and soul and it evolved to rock and roll. People that weren't afraid to try new things in that era not just one person, contributed.

Agreed. We had the blues. We had jazz. Rock n Roll is American. Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Guitar Slim, Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Buddy Holly just to name some of the originaters. Then there was Hendrix, Allman Brothers, Jefferson Airplane, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Buffalo Springfield, Chicago, Steve Miller, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The James Gang, The Eagles, The Doors, and Aerosmith just to name a few.
