Also, make sure you establish good technique early on. Bad habits are tough to break. So be sure and have your instructor set you up with solid technique -- believe me, you will progress much faster and hit fewer road blocks if you know the most efficient and comfortable way to use your bass. Good luck! It's a really great instrument that is often overlooked.

Honestly, it really depends. Do you have any experience with other instruments? Maybe drums or guitar? Are you taking lessons, or will you be self-taught? And finally, how often will you practice? If you practice often, get a schedule going, get your scales DOWN and learn from the best (like Vic up there), the learning curve for bass is not too steep. If you're serious, it will come easy. So be serious about it!
