Agree with the settings. That's what I use on my Canon 50D, XSi etc with Studio Whale Tail and works just fine. Except ISO200 indoors works just fine for me, even up to f/8 @ 1/60) Good video for starters, thanks.

Need a little help here. I have the Whaletail and when I attach it to my flash, the flash will not fire. I use the Olympus FL-36. Setting ISO 200 in P mode. help. Should I turn up the ISO? I use the Olympus E-510. Thanks for the help!

OK Problem solved. The issue was my metering setting in manual and program mode was set to centerweighted averaging instead of Evaluative on my 10D. Once I got that reset I was getting good results at 400 and 800 ISOs. Thanks for the problem solving....

On the correctly exposed image, that you emailed to me, the metering was set to pattern. On the dark image, the metering was set to centerweighted averaging. It looks like your camera metered only for the skin tones and not the black shirt or darker background. That's why the TTL threw off the flash.

I sent you a message offering to call you - I'm limited to 500 characters here. No way 800,3.5@1/30 will be underexposed if 100, 3.5@1/60 was a good exposure. Also, both flaps open is rarely correct.

Took several shot at ISO 800, f3.5 @ 1/30 of a second. All were dark and under exposed. These were taken in my home office with only artificial light available. The auto settings ISO 100, f3.5 and 1/60 of a second. The flaps were wide open on both shots. The auto shots were well espoused but I had a dark shadow behind the subject, frankly I get a much better results just taking the WT off and tilting the 580 lens slightly and using the built in white card that comes with the lens.

It's difficult to imagine that you are underexposing with a wide open aperture and 1/30 second, but getting good exposure in auto. What exposure settings is the auto mode selecting? What are the ambient conditions, how are the WT flaps adjusted, how far are you from the subject?

I just got a whaletail studio. I'm using a Canon 10D and a 580 flash. I've tried the setting you recommended and I'm getting underexposed shots. Only when I run on totally automatic do I get a good exposure. Even shooting at ISO 800 and wide open on the aperture at a 30th of a second I'm getting poor exposure. What do you think I'm doing wrong?

Yes, but once you reach the minimum power the flash can put out, it won't go any less no matter what you do, so then you have to reduce the ISO or stop down as we were discussing.
