written and performed by kenneth stirling copyright 2007 kenneth stirling aphrodite, you're the goddess of love you look on me from above from the sea you fell where white roses grow can you hear the crowd calling, it's time to go I leave my mask and all my things with aphrodite as she sings she winks an eye and says to me all them bright lights, they won't set you free I cross the river and the flashing cars as jupiter gives in to mars and past children playing with the night and up the stairs to the gladiator fight at the door they won't let me in and he holds all the cards with his grin he says you gotta go to the other side and keep goin' down to where the slaves all hide I arrive to the roaring sound and with his voice he holds them down a hundred pressed up against the wall he says some of you will work and some of you will fall I am white amongst the black and nothin' has changed as I turn back to where the thief he sits and waits and holds all the tickets there by the gate he opens and the blowers and the pickers ascend to where the game is at its end with masks and shoulder strapped machines we do our best to clean up this filthy dream we blow through the dirty night as the rain falls so soft and light but they're picking food up of the ground oh aphrodite, I'm such a long way down and I find myself with the indian crew who laugh and smile and say it's good for you they say, man, you should do the same but I'm caught up in a cage and I'm goin' insane back in the park where the wintersweet blooms it is so lovely underneath the moon I see bats flyin' across the sky I just wanna lie with you aphrodite you're the goddess of love and you look on me from above from the sea you fell where white roses grow I feel so tired, I just wanna go home
