I've wondered about the lack of scratching on the old recordings. I mean by the cellists, not the surface noise of the recordings. Sometimes I think maybe the lack of high end may have masked a few flaws...but I don't know, when you hear all the other technique of someone like Fuermann then you think maybe it's true that he really didn't scratch. Antonio Janigro also made a beautiful recording of Brahms Double Concerto. (with Jean Fournier vl.)

What a cellist, I don't believe there has been anyone since his death who has matched his technical facility nor his ability to sing with the cello. This is an absolutely unique sound which we may never again encounter...akin to Heifetz on the violin.

Feuermann--the scratchless cellist! A joy to listen to and a consummate artist. Many thanks for this upload. For those who may not know it, there is a brilliant recording of him and Heifetz playing the Brahms Double Concerto.

The photos are a very nice touch. EF was one of the numerous great artists whose life was cut short for tragic reasons. Had he lived longer...who knows what sort of music making might have transcended the millenum?!
