But the people in the movie who are British weren't born in Australia. They were all imports - Morris Stanley and his wife were sent to Australia from England. The Burns brothers are from Ireland - although it's not stated how they got there.
I know that's not what you meant. But I think that likely, the accent was influenced by the Aborgine one maybe. Who knows?

ofschorchedpumpkins: I am not sure either, it probably has to do with the character's past, and as they are Irish, Connemara is a part of Galway (west Ireland) - just FYI if you didn't know.

Film sounds a bit like my Dad's ancestors, two young male cousins from Kildare transported for life in the 1820s to NSW for stealing a horse. They were assigned to a navy lieutenant to settle his property [his reward for service to Lord Nelson at Trafalgar] in the Hunter Valley. "Good" cousin was pardoned and settled down. "Bad" cousin ran off with a gang of Irish bushrangers [outlaws]. He was later caught but acquitted. He went back to the bush, never to be heard of again.

Would you prefer if everyone in 1800s Australia spoke like John Wayne?
