Some nifty rhythm guitar work here also. agree on Wettons bass approach

The Budapest 2004 version shows how to cover this track minus the lyrics and with a bass that compliments rather than distracts.

Fair comment. Listen to Rutherford's pedal work, often sounding a single bass note for the beginning of each bar. The original FOF is beautiful and it's a lead and drum track.
Sturmer ruined it. This bassist is showing off on a Genesis classic that made its name without a bass line trying to cram in as much as possible.
This is a cover and SH obviously approves, but he's lost the Gibson howl of Seconds Out and Wetton should play less. He may hit less bum notes that way!

You're only 10 and you like Genesis. Man, you're living my life all over again kid! You've got good taste. Check out some of Mr. Hackett's solo work, you'll be very impressed. And if you see him in concert, you'll be hooked for life! :-)

"Bass is meant to be in support of drums" As a drummer, I disagree. They can complement one another, and often do, but to say that the bass is meant to support the drums is a very rigid and limited view point, IMO. In my world, :-) there are no absolute rules like this in music (thank god) so what you are saying is your opinion of course. Personally, I love Wetton's approach to the bass on this song. It might be be a tad high in the mix, but I love what he does with it.

I've watched this video over 160 times. I cannot get enough genesis. I have a ton of albums and yet i am only 10 years old

I think the bass playing sounds better than the recording

i'll admit the bass is a little distracting at first, but once steve really kicks in it's all good. name one other guitarist that still had the magic touch 20+ years after. clapton? page? richards? i think not!
