One of my favourite films, and one of the best scene from it. Absolutely amazing.

This is based on a novel. Ray have just created the scene based on the story...

somehow the scene resembles another train scene in clear sky by Eisenstein..if I am not mistaken..trains particularly steam locos keeps on coming back in cinemas..they have some camaraderie I guess

Ray was also an artist/paintings and novelist. He had drawn all the images of his books and film posters, including his self potraits and his famous characters Feluda and Shonku.
In film making, he was not only the director, but also script writer, costume designer, ads/poster designer, music composer (although, music of pather pachali was composed by great Ravi Shankar).
I wonder what branch of art and literature he had left out to step in. This sort of versatile people born in centuries.

Ray had to struggle hard to arrange funding for this film. There were no producers interested. Ofcourse, those dickheads that time never predicted what masterpiece Ray was about to bring. He had to use his savings, took loan and finally his wife jewellery. He had to shoot only in weekends to keep his regular job.

I'd rather say Americans who've never stepped out of their country should see these films. It's amazing to see that when in America, the international news on tv is news about other states. Everyone thinks their country is the world and everything beyond is a barren wasteland full of poor people. I've seen this.
Of course you're right, Everyone must be exposed to better arts and cultures of the world. I wish we had more of good art than thousands of wasteful productions.

Americans are not as close minded as many Americans themselves seem to think. I know many American people who have lived and worked in Asia and speak many languages. I am one of them. Of course, if you live in the boonies people are different where you live. But that's in EVERY COUNTRY. And wishing people could be 'forced' to view something seems pretty closed minded to me. Why not say,' I wish all people could be better exposed to the arts and cultures of other countries'?

one of the greatest scenes in cinema history..the lead up to the moment when the train rumbles past in the scene has been masterfully crafted by the legendary Ray..
