Very Close overtake and Undertake

The first 'chap' passes me very close. In fact it shook me up more than any other pass has. I was in a strong secondary position at the time. This was followed by a stupid undertake when I was in primary. There was no need for either maneuver as I caught up and overtook them a short while later. What is the rush!!! :-(

Keep a sparkplug in your pocket and when you ride past them again hold it in your fist and hit their windscreen with the pointy end and it will smash like nothing else and with busy traffic you will be gone.

Yesterday was centre of the road in the middle of a local town, doing maybe 18kph (12mph). Didn't get honked at all...probably because I was behind cars that were going at that speed and were holding me up! If I'd been doing 40kph and by myself though, I would have been "inconsiderate" and a "damned nuisance"? On experience, yes, that would be how I would be seen. Why though? Why is a cyclist in the middle of the road bad, when a car that is just as slow OK? Double standards.

The highway code says that you are legally entitled to ride on any road except motorways. Its all easy enough for drivers to look up, and I'd advice all UK cyclists to do the same. ;-) I would also point out that its hard to avoid these types of roads if you have long journeys.

The highway code says you are allowed to be, just as drivers are. The highway code also stipulates that drivers must leave a cars width when overtaking cyclists. My phylosophy is this - if I can touch your vehicle as you overtake then you're too close. Obviously on smaller roads this can get a bit trickier, but theres no need for pinching and cutting up.

Nothing wrong with magnatom's road positioning. Positioning is dictated by circumstances but a lot of the time centre is safest - for the reasons magnatron highlighted and also cyclists who cycle "in the gutter" are in a fair bit of danger from pedestrians, opening car doors not to mention being buffeted towards pavement by vehicles overtaking too close.
