Yves Rossy leapt from a plane at more than 2,500 metres, then fired up his wing for the 35-kilometre trip from Calais, France. Rossy passed over a thin strip of land in front of South Foreland lighthouse, looped over onlookers and opened his parachute, his jet-propelled wing still strapped to his back. "It was perfect. Blue sky, sunny, no clouds, perfect conditions," he said. "We prepared everything and it was great." Rossy leapt from a plane more than 8,800 feet or a mile and a half from the ground, before firing up his jets. He made the 22-mile trip from Calais in France to Dover in England in a little under 15 minutes. He began the Friday flight just before 1207 GMT; by 12:15 GMT, Rossy was above British soil and looped over onlookers before opening his parachute, with his wings still strapped to his back. He touched down in a field near the famous white cliffs of Dover. The trip across the channel is meant to trace the route of French aviator Louis Bleriot, the first person to cross in an airplane 99 years ago. The lighthouse was the site of Guglielmo Marconi's experiments with radio telegraphy in 1898. Bleriot used the white building as a target during his pioneering flight, the building's manager, Simon Ovenden, said. Several hundred spectators rushed to greet Rossy, trying to take photographs with cameras and cellphones. "It's a remarkable achievement, we saw the climax of his attempt as he came down to earth with his parachute. It's been an exciting afternoon," said Geoff Clark, a 54-year-old onlooker from Chatham, in Kent. The carbon composite-wing weighs about 55 kilograms when loaded with fuel, and carried four kerosene-burning jet turbines that kept him aloft. The wing had no steering devices - Rossy moved his body to control its movements. He wore a heat-resistant suit similar to that worn by firefighters and racing drivers to protect him from the heat of the turbines. The cooling effect of the wind and high altitude also prevented him from getting too hot. Mark Dale, the senior technical officer for the British Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association, described Rossy's flight as a "fabulous stunt." Also everything I said was supposed. I was only using my imagination as to what this invention could become. So before you go around trashing what other people say, why don't you consider imagination. You fuckin know it all.

Are you telling me that the germans could fly around just as fast as this guy. It's not like the jets we have don't allow people to know their coming, so why not use it with people. Even if it isn't used for military why couldn't it be used for personal transport once it advances more. Don't get stuck on what the Nazi's were incapable of doing, because times have changed and I doubt you have the knowledge to know all that this invention can't be advanced.

relax buddy, this is not for war, its for fun and no you are wrong, nothing like this has ever been done that is somewhat safe, reliable and fast, so relax and go do your research before you open your mouth.

Jet on a man's back is nothing new. Jet packs were first used in WWII by Germany. This model is actually worse bcuz it can't take off on its own. WWII models could do that. This would not be practical for military use. Enemies could hear and see heat signature from jet pack with IR cameras from miles away. Germany knows that, that's why they bagged this comic book science technology. The only thing this is good for is circus air shows.

This thing could be used now in the military. Imagine having paratroopers where they don't have to be dropped right above their target, but instead can be dropped 40 miles away. They could jet to their target and then land in wherever they want. Imagine the possibilities.

The thing that is so advanced about this is that it's a jet on a mans back. Even though he has to jump out of a plane for it to work, it's still the first of its kind. Could the first airplanes work as well as the ones we have now, no they couldn't. This technology can now be advanced and eventually be used for more conventional means. Imagine military wise.

what's so "advanced" about this? he has to be dropped from a plane and uses a parachute for landing. yea, i can totally see people in the future traveling this way...it's SOOO CONVENIENT! (SARCASM)
