It was written about a male-female relationship. But - Debby chose to dedicate it to God, as that was (and still is) the center of her life and the Lord was (and is) the light of her life. But - the lyrics involve a male-female relationship and Debby explains all of that in a 1970s interview.

I had just been divorced - then MJ came into my life at the time this song was so popular. MJ and I had been married 29 yrs this past Sept. This song reminded me that all the things I have and all the things I am belongs to my Darling MJ.
