Alternative (i.e. down, up, down up...) picking is quite important. As commented below, it does allow the freedom to play faster with less tension and strain on your picking hand.

Yeah that'll work to start. You can ten try two then four per beat to work on your timing. Eventually you can do triplets and then dotted eightnotes followed by a 16th note for swing style rythem.

Just start slow and make sure you do everything to a metronome and you'll be fine.

well down picking can get tiring. i should probably try it. but i'm afraid i'd be doing something wrong. theres always some technique to things like rollingg and bendingg
