I keep my a supply of dryer lint in an altoids can along with some steel wool and my flint. They will start a fire with one strike.

A tip: If you wrap that cotton/lint(covered in vasoline) with aluminum foil you can store those without the need of a medicine bottle(more compact). Also if you wrap it neatly enough you can just cut a x in the foil and you'll have a candle(just pull some of the lint/cotton up in the middle for a wick)

why dont you add the vaseline before going out so its even faster in a survival situation.
