I just bought a 20" widescreen monitor for my laptop. It works very well in audio and video editing, and reading text in full width is rather pleasant. I like to resize my browser window to full screen height * half screen width. That way I can get a more vertical view of the pages I'm browsing, and it also leaves some space for the desktop or other programs, if I need to do some drag-n-dropping, for example. I haven't had any negative experiences with this monitor.

I don't like widescreen, I want like a 22" standard size.

I have widescreen, it's annoying sometimes. Browsing and youtube is all 4:3. Only reason I like it is when I watch a widescreen movie and not have the black boxes on the bottom and top, also I do music and video, which spreads the space I have to work with which is better. It's depending on what you do, not what you have or what is new.

having a bigger monitor will force the pixels to put out more and will over heat your computer faster

not really, widescreen is perfect for web browing. hell look at youtube for example.

since most software formats work best 4:3, they made widescreen in order to get you to buy bigger monitors to get the same quality(because of wasted space on the side). this way make more money. that simple. you'll also notice that 4:3s are non-existant in the 20 inch+ section

Most 17" and 19" LCD's are actually 5:4 aspect ratios, not 4:3 5:4 ratio is a little squarer than 4:3 I took back the widescreen I bought and got a 19" standard. It sucks for movies but is much better for computer use. Not much choice when shopping for standard monitors anymore. Some stores only sell widescreens, or just one standard model.

I'm gonna settle this by saying widescreen wins. Don't get me wrong.. it's only one type of widescreen. The type that can rotate to vertical. So whatever suits you you can have.

Wide screen sucks for me because I am functionally blind in one eye. So with my new widescreen monitor, I have to turn my head left and right to much.
