Oh, boy, a comment on a OLD video, heh.
The flaps have strong plastic "hangers" that holds onto the rod on the Whaletail Studio body. You can open and close the flaps any direction you want and it'll hold steady. :)

I usually use the Gary Fong Whaletail Studio when I need to travel light without carrying the flash bracket.
