Honestly I wouldn't put too much stock in any of these lessons... the guy's understanding just isn't that great. He strikes me as someone who knows how to teach it from a text-book, but doesn't really get what it's all about. But then agian trying to teach aikido in 1:29 clips on the net is pretty much futile.

no I know what to do I am just saying that they should also go over the way to do it if they properly apply the rear bear hug choke I take Matsubayashi Shorin Ryu and they go over it all.

So you're asking what to do if it's a different attack?... A different defense.

I hope you get to see the power of Aikido by watching him rather than a whole lot of whatever thats out there. Good luck:)

Im not sure Aikido itself claims to be the ultimate martial arts, perhaps a lot of people out there claim it to be so. Also a lot of Aikido Ive seen on youtube is complete crap! Unfortuantely not all Aikido is equal in terms of effectiveness and it is very unfortunate indeed that people who teach crap Aikido give false confidence to those learning it. You have to look quite hard to find Aikido worthy of praise, if you want to see how effective Aikido can be then search for Saito Sensei.

This is actually the most intelligent argument I've heard for aikido, that it's better than nothing and will work some percentage of the time. My problem with aikido is that it claims to be the ultimate martial art, when it's actually average at best. The false confidence it gives may actually make it worse than not knowing anything. I can agree to an extent about the difficulty of achieving over/unders; it's not easy against another grappler, but quite easy against non-grappling oriented arts.

Remember also that things happen very quickly in fights and you would have to be quite lucky as a trained grappler to get another trained martial artist into a strong over/under unless you surprised attacked them from behind in a dark alley.

Sigh, you know what? There are probably hundreds of thousands of cases throughout the world where people have been given bear hugs like these with the victims having no idea how to get out of them. Not everyone out there who is an aggressor is a trained martial artist in fact most martial artists refrain from using their art unless you work in security or fight for a living. So all due respect as a martial artist myself its necessary to cover all attacks even if it appears very weak. |
