Well) I live in Ukraine and I could say just this: 1) during explosion NOTHING was done (so most mass of radioactive particles went to atmosphere); 2) reactor is unstable even now; 3) reactor will be stable if nuclear fuel will be unloaded from ruined reactor. ...and there is 20 mikrorentgen in Kiev (that's capital of Ukraine) now (that's OK) such level of radioactivity is is London for example. And one can live even near 30 kilometer zone whithout of any harm.

It´s intersting that US detect an increase of the radiation in the atmosphere, and nuclear dust was detected in Canada, No one remember of those URSS soldiers that cleaned the area and today suffer the late effects of nuclear contamination!

Now there is the most powerful reactor in the world, RBMK type, like in Chernobyl, but with modern security systems. In 2009 it will be shut down and modern reactors installed in the future.
