Well - the Hudson Line is Metro North's name for their portion (the first 75 miles) of the old New York Central "Water Level Route" Main Line from Grand Central Terminal (New York City) to LaSalle St Term. (Chicago). Amtrak (formerly Delaware & Hudson)'s Adirondack is a passneger train which travels from New York City to Montreal via this route but it is only on the Hudson Line to around MP-159, then the train swings onto D&H rails to continue North toward Canada while the NYCentral curves West.

The Hudson Line? That's towards Montreal, I would guess. So do the kerosene powered (if they are still running) trainsets draw juice for the first 35 miles (nearly 10%) of their journey between New York and Montreal before switching on their turbines? The New Haven Line sounds like operation between North & South London (Thameslink) involving 750v dc 3rd rail & 25kv ac overhead.

The third rail goes 35 miles up the Hudson Line, and 55 miles up the Harlem Line. It also extends a few short miles from up the New Haven Line to Pelham where trains change over on the fly to 11000kV AC Catenary

That looks like third rail electrification on 3 out of 4 tracks? How extensive is this? How far out of NEw York does the 3rd rail reach?

30 is pretty impressive, but was it around like 1:30 a.m. in the morning that you saw the second CP trip coming Southbound. One time when I was at Marble Hill waiting for the 1 train coming home at 1:31 a.m. on a Saturday, I saw CP coming Southbound underneath the 1's line and it was carrying 50 cars. BTW what is a vanDope. Someone else told me that they are planning on cutting the CP run out Fresh Pond.

+/-30 cars BOTH TRIPS last week (6/9/2008 & 6/12/2008). Small train that was to quit running in Jan of 2007 according to a vanDope

CP won't be buying anything in the NY market. They are almost ready to pull out of the 416/417 game. Which is a shame - but with the economy turning south their traffic is way down.....

I always thought only Province & Worcester delivers stone to Fresh Pond to be interchanged with NYAR, but I'm seriously hoping CSX and Canadian Pacific buys some track rights in Suffolk and Nassau County someday, because think about it Conrail use to run their own freight down the Bay Ridge Branch which is an 11 mile line.

especially with the construction industry (and several other sectors of the economy) slowing there isn't as much traffic for them to bring down right now. However once the warm weather is back you can be sure they'll be back to hauling 15 car cuts of LIRR ballast and some stone depending on who gets the Prima Contract (Tilcon/P&W or the CP guys).... |
