I shudder to think what would have happened if the British & American armies in Western Europe had had to face a full-strength Wehrmacht that had not been massively depleted in manpower from land warfare on a huge scale for 3 years against the Red Army on the Eastern Front. Clearly, if there had been no Eastern Front, the war in the West would have been far more protracted, bloodier, and costlier to the Western Allies than it was; indeed, the Western Allies may have even lost a conventional war.

The USSR did the most to defeat Nazi Germany. Read what Roosevelt wrote in a letter written to MacArthur in 1942: "...the Russian armies are killing more Axis personnel and destroying more Axis materiel than all the other twenty-five United Nations put together." The Red Army inflicted some 90 percent of the Wehrmacht's casualties, or 4.9 million German dead or wounded while the total German dead and wounded inflicted by the Western Allies in Northwest Europe, Italy, and Africa was 580,000.

Even if the British &/or Americans had taken Berlin, they would still have had to withdraw to their respective zones of occupation in Germany and Berlin. It cost the Soviets 100,000 casualties to take Berlin and still the Soviets had to withdraw from the British, American and French zones of occupation in Berlin to allow the Western Allies to occupy their respective sectors. The Allied zones of occupation in Germany & Berlin had all been decided at Yalta in February 1945.

I know this comment will seem pretty awful based on a movie. But if Eisenhower diverted all of his attention to Patton and the Third Army, backing them up. The war on the Western Front might of been over by Christmas. Then, Berlin, Prague, etc. would fall into the hands of the US, UK, France, etc., not those damn Commies.
