woops haha anyways im a student at julliard pre college. and i played this piece a few years ago. and i was lucky enough to get a masterclass from yo yo ma. before we started, we were discussing a bit of his background.(haydn's) anyways we ended up in the cadenza. and also, you really dont need to structure a cadenza. it fairly means to play as the way the soloist desires.(maybe as long as its in the same key). as you can see, rostros cadenza was played in a minor key too.

I don't understand what your comment has to do with mine. Also some people wrote theirs down starting in the classical period, Mozart would plan his out, he has a structure to them. You can look it up if you like, it actually makes it fairly easy to structure your own. I wrote one for the mozart 3rd violin concerto following the form and it was relatively easy.

okay, a cadenza in haydns time was never actually written in. a cadenza is where a soloist would basically show off his talent. so if u look at the original piece it would say cadenza with the musicians choice. many were never written in. this is obviously rostros finest. actually it was written for him. just forgot his name.

Rostropovich is simply amazing. The high (thumb positions) sound so amazingly clear.

Sometimes cadenzas are improvised, sometimes they are written. It's a chance for the soloist to express themselves however they want.

i agree, it's a little odd. Probably not too period correct, either way it's entertaining though. Still, its a lot of diminished chords and dark sounds for a concerto in C major.

There were no developed concerto cadenzas in bach's time. In Bach's time it was little more than a flourish on the final dominant.

This is my favorite recording of the work. There's a problem with the video and audio at 3:59, just before the "surprise" transition... is there any way you could upload a clean copy to fix this? Anyways, great piece.
