computersANDstuff, You are making a basic error. A 5.56 has a faster initial velocity up to 400m upon which point a .308 would overtake it - the 308 gathers power as it reaches its terminal velocity and will hit at 4 times the power after this range also remaining steadier for much longer. This is what we snipers would call Ballistic advantage - this is the range at which a sniper would want to engage you at before you got any closer and therefore gained the ballistic advantage yourself.

5.56 bullets have a greater velocity and a much further range - thats why. And even 5.56 can take an arm off, trust me.
