DealExtreme 200mw green laser & diffraction grating

This is what my DealExtreme 200mw green laser looks like in a small room with a little smoke to make the beam glow a little brighter. The diffraction gratings used were 2 Double Axis-13,500 Line/inch straburst gratings. The two gratings were held together with approx. 25 degrees angle twist (e.g. Not both square as this produces on overlap pattern, rather than a double diffraction pattern). These gratings are available on-line. Please no comments on the lack of safety glasses... Haha. I was still waiting on delivery of the glasses and couldnt help myself making the clip without them... Feel free to comment....

haha i got one and the first thing i did was point it at my arm.....yep, its powerful!

hmm, don't do this, please.. it's 200mw, it can damage your eyes, maybe skin and so on.. dangerous if you don't know where it will point.. carefully with that

The infrared does not focus as well, i happen to own a 30 mw green and 200 mw red from DX and having played around with them i can tell you the greens do not have ir filters in them (red not required). The green lasers are a high power IR diode which pumps a block of a specially doped material (Nd:YVO4?) to produce 1064nm light (also IR), which is then frequency doubled with a special crystal (KDP?) into green light (532nm. at a bare minimum there is 1000 mw of infrared coming out of that laser.

That is not true. If the laser actually put out 1800mW of IR, it would be way better at burning things, and it would quickly destroy cheap diffraction gratings like those from Rainbowsymphony. Dealextreme lasers do put out some IR because they lack filters, but in this case, I would be much more worried about the ~200mW of actual green light.

most video cameras can display infrared radiation to a certain degree... just you have safety glasses which is good but just keep in mind that the crystals converting the IR diode to green light are around 10 percent efficient... meaning your ~200 mw green also puts out ~1800 mw of IR

Haha! Thanks for your concern about the IR. Damaging IR is not actually vsible to the human eye - or via my camera. You must be talking about the broad, torch like beam projecting out around the central focused laser beam?? This is actually a defect of MY laser. the beam was not correctly focused as as a result the laser can look more like a green torch over short distances. DX are replacing this lasre for me. Cheers for the comment though, and yeah - safety glasses are a good investment!

Dude!! You can see the IR light from that laser through the camera!! and your shining it right in your face!! U better be carefull. Ur eyesight will slowly get worse and worse if you keep that up. Invest in some eye protection!

Hi. Can you just give me the direct link to the exact product ? THanks
Thommo532 (February 19, 2008 at 10:38 am)
Thanks! The diffraction gratings (embossed Holographic Optical Element that looks like a clear projector slide)can be found on eBay or in bulk at w w w . Rainbowsymphony . com
