it's about the Catholic church. nothing to do with the spanish civil war. coldplay chose the title "viva la vida" because the spanish civil war can be paralleled to the rise and fall of the church. the heart of the church's power is the people. when the people rebel against it, or abandon it, it loses power. nowadays, the church has faded into the background of our society. centuries ago it basically ruled the world.
