For your first guitar, probably not. I'd recommend one of 3 guitars for your first one, either get:-
An Epiphone SG
A Squier Stratocaster
or an Ibanez GRG.
An SG will be good for sorta rock, hard rock metal, and chordy stuff... a Strat is better for rock, punk, blues, funk, sorta jazzy and old rock n' roll stuff. Get an Ibanez if you wanna play hard rock/metal or solo-ey lead guitar stuff.
They're all good guitars, just do some research and look up vids to see what you like the most.

i agree dcmey, i could see a chambered model sustaining longer wich would be nice- hopefully they will do the comparison, will be interesting to see everyones comments and opinions, im with you on the good pickups and craftsmanship, however the type of wood i think will only matter on an acoustic, magnets pull frequency off the steel strings and out comes your sound-i think the steel used in the string will have more affect on tone than the wood- density of wood however might affect it somewhat.

I have both of these guitars and you just can't beat the Gibson. It has a much thicker tone and it just FEELS like a serious instrument. Epiphones are alright. My first guitar was an Epiphone Les Paul but once I got a real Gibson... sorry Epiphone, back in the closet!

I own a VM, thats all Mahogany which is a darker sounding wood. I don't believe that it sounds higher, mine sustains for along time. 3 things make up a good guitar, they are good Wood, good Pickups, and good Craftsmanship. I made a comment on one Jucas videos hoping to see if he would do a video testing chambered and non chambered.
