I was 13 when I converted, and I've never looked back (3 years later).
I didn't do anything complex, not even a first try on the live cd, I just threw myself in the deep end straight away, and within hours I was already accustomed to this wonderful OS. Despite what you say, I found documentation from websites such as Ubuntu's own to be extremely useful and fascinating to equal measure.
My adoption encouraged my technically-illitarate mother to take it up full time, and she now loves it.

I've been using Linux for about 8 months at this point. I'm using Linux Mint and have it installed on my laptop.
Have I messed up Linux? Yes but its always been when I was trying something advanced. Its never messed up for my by just installing an application, thats always gone smoothly.
I've would not recommend Linux to the average user right now. Certain things just arent ready. I think some of them are coming soon, but they aren't here yet.

same here also, but we have to agree, it's not easy, even it's to hard to handle switching from windows to linux (ubuntu), honestly I can't recommend to anybody excepts computer geeks.

Linux was never forced upon me, I have used Windows all my life, I got curious, burned an ubuntu LiveCD, popped it in the CD tray, and I fell in love.
