"Midnight Rider" was very sensationalistic and too heavy (in my opinion) with the legal stories. I thought it had the narrative to put the band, except Duane, in the worst possible light. The band gave no cooperation to the author and discouraged everybody from reading the book. Maybe this inspired the author to be a bit vengeful. ABB music is the best and this is undeniable.

I heard that it was Dicky's SG (which makes sense if you go back to the earlier dates like love valley , you see Dicky playing the SG) anyway I heard that he gave it to Duane to try for slide playing & Duane obviously loved it & used it for slide work & his 2 Les Pauls (CSB & Tobacco Burst) for lead work. I know he had a gold top, not sure what the story is w/ that one..it had a great tone to it. I had a Black '79 Standard, great guitar looked like Jeff Beck's on "Blow by Blow"

Hey Dave...I was wrong, I re-read the Skydog book and apparently the SG was owned by Dickey but he sold it to Duane so he could have enough money to buy his goldtop that he always wanted. After Duane's death the guitar was given-willed to Duane's friend and protege Gerry Groom who in turn sold it to Graham Nash's wife so she could give it to Graham as a Christmas present...all's well that ends well...I think it in good hands :)) Sorry for the long comment :))

Some say it's a little ... less accurate. But still a good book. And I always thought it was the other way round, that Duane gave the SG to Betts. :-) Dave

Interesting I haven't heard about the book "Midnight Rider", I hope it's accurate and factual. I've read "Skydog", about Duane's life and in it I believe it says that Dickey was the original owner of the SG and he gave it to Duane...it is now owned by Graham Nash.

Dickey stated he had to make changes to the guitar because he felt he couldnt play it right exactly like Duane had it set up.

If you knew anything about the Allman Brothers you would know that Dickey got Duane's red SG after his death and played the fuck out of it. At least Duane's guitar is still getting played instead of collecting dust in some room... exactly how Duane would have wanted it... Check out a book called Midnight Rider if your a true Allman Bro's fan, it will set you straight.
