I'd recommend you read The Botany of Desire. I read it before Mckenna's "Food of the Gods" and found that Pollan's book made for a good stepping stone into some of the concepts discussed by Mckenna. Pollan's experience certainly isn't as in depth as Mckenna's and not all of his insight is perfect but I think he puts things out there in a way that is easy for the mainstream individual to come to terms with.
