thats because melodic minor it has a raised 6th and 7th accending and deccending its 6th and 7th is lowered

i find its alot easier knowing the notes rather then the fret positions, gives you an idea of what notes patterns you hit, Or just google guitar scales, its everywhere.

The scale may start on a different note, either way if it is a minor it would have the same rule, but you sed 5 positions? well a five note scale , like portra said, pentatonic minor.
