I have a capture card that you actually put the hardware into the computer its a wintv. Do i need all of the same equipment to do that if its already plugged straight into my hardrive?

Yes if you are using this then you cannot record in HD, also rather than having 2 cables like he explained and that silly female to female dongle plug the 3 female splitter parts into the tv with both the xbox and the male male cable into the capture card, this way you save money and alot of wasted cable around the place. also note that if you are using the dazzle capture card the software it comes with has some issues with windows vista.
