Sankara was going along the street one day with his pupils to take bath in the Ganges when he met a Chandala who was also passing along the street with his dogs by his side. The disciples of Sankara shouted and asked the Chandala to clear off the road. The Chandala asked Sankara: "O, venerable Guru! You are a preacher of Advaita Vedanta and yet you make a great difference between man and man. How can this be consistent with your teaching of Advaitism? Is Advaita only a theory?". Sankara was very much struck by the intelligent query of the Chandala. He thought within himself, "Lord Siva has assumed this form just to teach me a lesson". He composed then and there five Slokas called the 'Manisha Panchaka'. Every Sloka ends thus: "He who learnt to look on the phenomena in the light of Advaita is my true Guru, be he a Chandala or be he a Brahmin"

Beautiful Video -- I love this- I can only pick out a few of the words in hindi and sanskrit -- but the tone and the beauty of this is immense. Dahndabatt

I just wanted to say that Adi Shanaracharya was the most brilliant and intelligent person to ever grace this Earth. No Human being after him can even hold a candle to his brilliance. A major blow for those eurocentric people! -Muski

Katy, yes you are correct. Veda is one but there are 4 Main Bhagas (Groups) within it, which talks about 4 Main Topics such as: RigVeda- All about Science, Human Anatomy, sickness and cure etc. Yajurveda -- Management, Business, life, people etc. Samaveda - Political Science, dharma/adharma, etc. Atharvaveda -- Mechanics, Engineering. These are the 4 main Vedas.

The chandala is shiva and four dogs are the vedas. this is just wrong. because vedas were never FOUR. Its only one. VEDA There are four bhaga of VEDA. THERE ARE NO VEDAS. our schools teaches that there are four vedas.. its wrong. THere is ONE VEDA. FOUR BHAGA(like chapters). People should research more on this.

Advaitins think they only know God, and he is in their pockets, God is beyond description, but every human being including Shankara or Madwa or ramanuja whatever looked at God perceived differently and each one is right

Lovely to see this film of such an important event...even better that it is in Sanskrit...yay! (Just so you know, most Vaisnavas have nothing but respect for Bhagavatpada Shankaracharya...like us Nimbarkis!)

Hare-Krishna movement as it exists now has strayed away from the path as enunciated by Sri La Prabhupada withpaedophiles, homosexuals and sexual maniacs existing in the organization. This has no comparision to the pristine beauty of Adi Shankara's advaitha before which even dwaitha and visishitaadwaitha fails. The other two sects came because, adwaitha philosophy is really the highest and thus could not be understood properly by neophytes and vaishnavite-religious fundamentalists.
