This movie was a failed try. Bergman had to abandon its original idea (a daughter gives birth to his mother).
He had trouble representing that.
If this movie was made in the fiveties he woult have reach such a difficult goal without any doubt.

Tell me about it. At first, I thought Liv Ullmann was such a weird looking lady but after watching couple of films of hers, I find her amazingly attractive in a strange way, not to forget to mention .. powerful performer.

Out of the three Bergman films I've seen so far, this one is still my favorite.

the look she gives her mother as she plays the piano leaves me speechless. Such honest acting.

I think Liv Ulmann is one of the greatest actresses in cinema history.

Yeah, they had a violent argument which scared the other in the crew. Ingrid Bergman had prepared for the role as she used to do. She had read the script and prepared how to pronounce every word. Ingmar was terrified and told her to forget everything and do as he told her. Then it all broke lose

I think Bergman wrote a little about it in "The Magic Lantern."

Thank you Ingmar Bergman for showing how to properly use an actress of Ingrid Bergman's caliber.. watch and learn. I just wish more knew of Ingrid's performance in this one and that you get to watch this film (and Ingrid combined with Liv Ullmann.. this is pure vulcano fire!). Touching and heartfelt, and traumatizing and stirring film.. RIP Master. |
