I think it is calle an e-bow. Peter Buck uses it and in P. Jam's video history of this album (?) Eddie and Stone or Gossard argue about how and who should play the solo. To use an e-bow or not. Gossard plays the solo straight (w/out the e-bow) and it sounds great...ultimately E.V. plays it and it...well..it sounds great!!! Beautiful band! : )
