Vague explanation. An amateur will not understand why. Exposure compensation should be considered and a touch of the zone system to fully understand why whites and blacks turn grey.

Because the camera assumes everything is grey. So when you fill the frame with all black, the camera just thinks it's look at gray but that there's not enough light.

i understand how the histogram works and where the shadows, higlights, and midtones show. But how come then he took the picture of the black and white card, the showed up where the midtones should be?

getpalls - he took a picture of all three cards at the end, not just the black and white. Watch again and the gray card is in the middle. Also, notice how he framed the shot in an attempt to get equal amounts of all three cards.

Nice video, I already knew about all this but you explained it very easily! I wanna see more of these vids, keep it up!
Just a question though, why is it when you took a picture of just the black and white card, the histogram showed the activity on the middle?
