you cant really tell the difference only if you like stand directly in front of the screen...and I dont wear glasses. I saw two HDTV in a store. One 720p the other 1080 running the same show and from 5 feet away you couldnt tell which was which.

there isnt really a big difference between 720p & 1080i I know this because I have 720p 32 Inch TV & my brother has a 1080i tv & both look the same

this may sound crazy but its true, if you own a interlaced television then you can see the flashes, all you have to do is have one colour on the screen at one time; like say i was changing channels on sky, the screen would be blue. Then if you look really carefully, you can see it slightly flicker, but when you start watching something again, you cannot notice it....so yeah you can; dont beleive me?....set ure tv to interlaced and see for yourself.

BZZZZZZZZZZ!! nice try but here is the REAL deal answer to the question:
purchasing a 1080p TV will give you true 1080 resolution.
purchasing a 1080i TV will force the television to down-convert the image into 720x1280. What this means is that if you are receiving NBC, CBS, or any other broadcast station that is transmitting in 1080i, the 720p tv will not show the full resolution, and will give a funky looking picture like blurring, and strobing.
