We live in a court society world now and to beat the crap out of anybody no matter what art can put you behind bars. Aikido teaches that reality, with the concept it's your decision as the practioner to neutralize the aggressor. I'm a daito-ryu aikijujutsu practioner myself and I can say the true budo lies in everyone. -bow-

Korean art Hwarang Do = internal & looks like Aikido & uses principle non-resistance. Noticed Hapkido publications moving away from mentioning Daito-ryu. Now say Hapkido roots go back centuries in Korea!!! Try 2 distance Hapkido from Japan? National pride?

They r separate arts. Hapkido shares little w/Aikido. Looks like JuJitsu with punches, kicks, & throws. What is similar - nikkyo, sankyo, kotegaeshi, shihonage. No body work like iriminage. No blending on level of Aikido. Trained w/Hapkido guys in Aikido - had good ukemi - techniques not so easy 4 them

Aikidoka, don't listen 2 anyone who says,"you just don't have guts to match or to surpass your master." His machismo is sticking out of his pants. Listen to your teacher, who has your development in mind (I hope). hvuu sounds like he hasn't trained very long. From what you've said, sounds like you have guts to train & that's all you need. Don't listen to him.

Sounds right to me. All the Aikido I've seen and done used soft power (non-muscular). Soft power and non-resistance are keynotes of 'internal' styles like Aikido & T'ai Chi. Sensei told us - make a balanced equation = 10. uke pushes with 8, nage sticks with 2/uke pulls back with 4, you stick with 6 to maintain contact & let uke's force continue to move without breaking the flow of it.

you've been reading waaay too much. you sou nd like a teen-ager with the "just don't have guts to match or to surpass your master". I don't know any martial artists that talk like that outside of tv shows.

Don't blame the system. Blame the instructor. You unfortunately met a bad instructor.

"Hapkido has nothing to do with Aikido"
REALLY?
I thought they actually came from the exact same martial art (Daito-Ryu Aikijujutsu) and were just different applications and philosophy regarding the -exact same techniques-
Oh wait, they did and they are.
Hapkido is for combat first spirituality second, Aikido is spiritual first and warfare hopefully never. |
