Back in the late 1980s there was a device in development which allowed carefully positioned electrodes to be placed on the forearms of a human. From the electrodes, tiny electrical currents stimulated contractions in the muscles causing the fingers to twitch, allowing the wearer to play almost any piece written for a keyboard instrument, in much the same way this automaton plays. I wonder what happened to that thing...
