In 1960 Joe Kitinger jumped from a specialised hot air balloon at 100, 000 feet. (approx 20 miles), he fell to Earth at the speed of sound but had no sensation of his speed and felt like he was suspended above the Earth.

He had a 6 foot canopy parachute that opened after 13 seconds to stabilize his fall, then after a further 4 minutes 36 seconds (at 17, 500 feet) his regular 28 foot chute opened.

Oh ok.I didn't know the gondola came back, it looked like it would just keep rising after he jumped

1. As he came closer to the ground his speed slowed because of increased air pressure. 2. Well, they have the footage from the gondola, so I suppose it eventually landed somewhere.
