The Wiltshire police air support unit G-WPAS is a McDonnell Douglas MD-902 Explorer, which has no tail rotor, instead it has a rotatable vent which expels hot air from the engines. Shown here lifting off from the helipad at Salisbury District Hospital, the pilot then does a nice "handbrake turn" followed by flying backwards before departing. Show-off! Edit: I now know it's a standard take off, and he's not showing off, he's being nice and safe. I don't have time to keep up with everybody telling me this, so I've closed the comments off.

Its nothing more than a normal take off procedure. He cant lift off and fly straight over the road and buildings incase he had an engine failure and crashed into them. he lifts to about 15ft and flys away from the structures. Once hes happy that the aircraft is running normally and hes ready for full take off his (hand brake turn) is just a normal procedure to get the aircraft facing into the wind so it gets full lift when he lifts of. Nothing fancy Im afriad

Its nothing but a stnadard take off.Youll notice there is a road and buldings in front of the aircraft. He cant lift and fly straight over them. if he had an engine failure on take off he would crash into the hospital (not good). He lifts to about 15ft and then flys away from the buildings. Once hes ready for full take off his (hand brake turn) is nothing more than a normal procedure as he has to turn so he take off into the wind. Not showing off im afraid. as much as hed probably like to!

Why sad? All helicopters are good. This flight arrived at Salisbury Hospital bringing in a casualty with a spinal injury from a riding accident.

I drive a really crap van all day, so anything with a jet engine in it is cool in my book.
