The fact that it's an artist's interpretation of a photograph does indeed make it art. Also the fact the artist is using his artistic knowledge (light, shadow, form, proportion, etc.) to make the image, which has a different quality than a photograph (a much better one in my opinion - because it shows how this artist can put his skills to work), makes it a piece of art. There is NO debate, this is widely accepted as art. If you wanted to argue if it's a masterpiece, then you have a debate ;)

dont listen to kuhlsnu. i'd like to see him/her try to do what you've done here. this is an amazing work of art. yes i did say art, dumbass. you have to be extremely good at drawing in order to make something like this picture, whether you do it using a computer or not. and as for using a photo in order to get better results? then y should u limit it to that? y not just say:"hey just look at the, well in this case, child, and just take in the beauty that way?
you dont, because u want to make art

I realize we are trying to get "art" but you can't use the term to justify your reasoning over mine.
I don't know how you can say at what point a photo becomes art, is it when a photo is replicated by hand using digital techniques?
What are really looking for here is photorealism using a digital program to alter hand drawn lines that are being traced using short term memory from a piece of paper he is looking at.
Why not use a real photo and get better results if you are going for realism?

no.. the goal is having a peice of art.
photo filtering is just clicking a few effects.
little to no skill is really needed.
and if your sugjesting tracing...
thats not much better.
what he does is amazing,
changing it in any way would be a crime.

I've just gotta ask... with such a use of a digital medium and using a photograph why not start with the photograph... filter it out to a 5 tone greyscale or just lines and go from there?
It doesn't seem like it would be as unique but the goal is to have a piece of art with correct dimensions and almost photorealism right?
